Disability representation in family film hits historic high

There was a lead character with a disability in eight percent of the 100 top-grossing family films last year, a historic high. The findings come from a report looking at the representation of race, gender, sexuality, age, body size and disability in films released in 2019 produced by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. However, the report also noted that “portrayals reinforce stereotypes.”

With remote learning, many students slip through the digital cracks

Delaware educators have voiced concerns for the health and academic progress of students who have not checked in since schools started remote learning to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Students who do not attend remote classes risk falling months behind in their classwork and facing a difficult re-entry when in-person school resumes.

Some Delaware physical therapists are offering telehealth sessions, demonstrating exercises and giving feedback to clients. The CEO of one physical therapy practice says they are seeing an increasing number of injuries like overuse syndrome and postural issues in people who have to spend more time sitting at computers to work remotely than they did before.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries will receive their coronavirus stimulus payment automatically. The government had previously said Social Security beneficiaries would not have to do anything to receive their stimulus payments, but excluded SSI. The change means SSI recipients, many of whom do not file taxes, will not need to take an additional procedural step to receive their check.

Delaware is mandating that all long-term care facilities set aside both staff and special space to care for COVID-19 patients. The order comes as COVID-19 spreads through nursing homes like the Milford Center, in which 61 residents and 13 staff members have tested or are presumed positive.
