‘A national disgrace’: 40,600 deaths tied to U.S. nursing homes
Since the beginning of March, fatalities among residents and staff in long-term care facilities have accounted for about 40 percent of the U.S. death toll attributed to Covid-19. Already vulnerable to contagious disease due to close-quarters living and high rates of preexisting health conditions, long-term care facility residents and staff also had difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment and conducting adequate testing. Experts express concern that easing coronavirus restrictions will exacerbate health risks within facilities.
