Nurses in Every School

Nurses in Every School

An Act to Amend Title 14 of the Delaware Code Relating to School Nurses

Synopsis:

H.B. 50 would ensure that districts and charters can afford a school nurse in every school by tapping Department of Education Division 1 appropriations for those currently lacking a school nurse. It also would allow districts to levy a “match tax” in order to fund the local share of the school nurse’s salary that is not covered by the state. For fiscal year 2018, the bill estimates the state share would be almost $1.5 million and the local share an additional $700,000. The number of students needing medical treatment at schools is steadily increasing, and many nurses currently split their time between multiple schools, managing well above the recommended number of students.
