Disability applications plunge as the economy strengthens

The number of Americans seeking Social Security disability benefits has significantly dropped; last year fewer than 1.5 million applied, the lowest since 2002. This trend indicates a stronger economy pulling employees back into the workforce, newly tightened eligibility for disability coverage and an increasing number of baby boomers leaving the program because they have become eligible for retirement benefits and Medicare.
